Bau Beton GmbH has joined the companies that have begun to perceive the ecological and economic benefits of rail freight transport. In cooperation with ÖBB, the company has put into operation a new connecting railway at the Port of Freudenau in Vienna. Bau Beton should be able to transport up to 80,000 tonnes of gravel and binder per year by rail, saving around 3,000 truck journeys.
The new link railway connects the company directly to the public rail network. Freight can thus be transported in an efficient door-to-door operation without changing the mode of transport. "The rail tunnel under the road has opened the door wide open to the European market for us," said Rudolf Mayer, Managing Partner of Bau Beton GmbH.
The extension of connecting railways is one of the important steps to shifting more traffic from road to rail to contribute to climate targets. Compared to road freight transport, rail freight transport is more environmentally friendly, space-saving, efficient, and safer. Every tonne of freight transported by train is 30 times more environmentally friendly than freight transport. The construction and improvement of freight transshipment facilities are also to contribute to a more optimal shift of traffic from road to rail in the future, according to the framework plan for the period 2023-2028.
"We consider it our responsibility to support the switch to rail also in freight transport. Because every tonne transported by rail protects the climate and contributes to environmental protection," emphasized Andrea Horneck, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, who coordinated the project at the Port of Freudenau.
