The scheme will cover the majority of the carrier’s international intermodal containers moving inland from Los Angeles at no additional charge to customers.

Matson will introduce a new intermodal cargo security programme in the second quarter of 2026 in partnership with BNSF Railway and War-Lok. Under the programme, War-Lok security devices will be installed on every international container transported from Los Angeles to destinations across the BNSF network, including Chicago, Memphis and Dallas. This forms the first layer of additional cargo protection.

The second layer is based on an agreement with BNSF to position Matson containers in the lower well of international intermodal railcars on services from Los Angeles to Chicago. The same arrangement will apply to shipments routed via the Chicago gateway to selected destinations in the eastern United States, up to the BNSF interchange point.

The initiative responds to an increase in cargo theft affecting the intermodal sector. Matson said the combined measures are designed to reduce exposure to theft during inland rail movements.

Matson operates expedited transpacific services between China and Long Beach under the China–Long Beach Express (CLX) and Matson Asia Express (MAX) brands, with onward inland distribution by rail and road across North America.
