The decision allows the Class 99 to operate across Britain’s mainline network, with commercial service planned for this summer.

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has received an Interim Network Rail Statement of Compatibility — the infrastructure manager’s approval confirming route compatibility — for its new Class 99 locomotives and accepted the first six units into its fleet.

The Interim Statement of Compatibility, issued by Network Rail, confirms that the locomotive meets infrastructure requirements such as gauge, axle load and electrical interface conditions. GBRf and Network Rail will continue the certification process towards full approval.

The first six locomotives have formally entered the GBRf fleet and will be used to expand driver training ahead of revenue operations. The Class 99 fleet is being manufactured by Stadler for the UK market.

The Class 99 is a bi-mode locomotive designed to operate under 25 kV overhead electrification and on non-electrified routes using a Stage V-compliant diesel engine. The configuration removes the need to change traction between electrified and non-electrified sections.

According to GBRf, maximising electric operation reduces fuel consumption and emissions compared with diesel-only freight locomotives, while maintaining nationwide freight capability.
