Old Norwegian trains may now get a new lease of life on the Ukrainian railway. Earlier this year, Norway donated 32 bridges to Ukraine. Now the donation will be followed by a total of twelve diesel train sets requested by Ukraine.

Norwegian Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård confirmed this to local news website Nettavisen.

"We will probably be able to send four of them before the summer, and probably eight more during the year," says the minister.

He believes it is important to get the trains into Ukraine.

"Transport is absolutely crucial for things to work. They are in a war situation and a lot of material, food and civil aid needs to be transported," he explains, adding:

"All infrastructure is crucial to make it work and we want to contribute what we can as a nation. The trains are another concrete example of that.

The trains being donated from Norway to Ukraine are not new. In fact, they are up to 40 years old. However it was Ukraine itself that wanted this type of equipment.
