KiwiRail and Stadler will prepare the three locomotives for operation over the next four to six weeks. After this phase, the locomotives will move to the main line for further testing.

KiwiRail has received the third batch of three Stadler DM locomotives at Lyttelton Port in New Zealand. The locomotives have been moved to Middleton Depot for testing and commissioning.

The locomotives were built by Stadler in Valencia, Spain. The delivery forms part of KiwiRail’s order for 66 locomotives, including 47 DM locomotives for South Island operations.

Four DM locomotives are already in service on the South Island, where they are used for freight operations. The fleet will also support Great Journeys New Zealand services once commissioned.

The locomotive procurement is backed by New Zealand Government investment.
