ERA: 50,000 Rail Vehicles Authorised in Less Than Four Years

The European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) has celebrated a milestone of getting 50,000 rail vehicles authorised for rail traffic in the EU.


ERA has become the main rail vehicle authorised in the EU between June 2019 and April 2023, with over 50,000 rail vehicles and 60% of all applications for authorisations submitted. The milestone was celebrated at the Brussels Midi Railway Station event, as the symbolic 50,000th vehicle was aimed at Belgian operator SNCB.

Between June 2019 and April 2023, the following statistics were published by ERA:

Share of vehicle type authorised:

  • 83% wagons
  • 11% trainsets and passenger cars
  • 11% trainsets and passenger cars
  • 6% locomotives
  • 0.2% special vehicles

Requests for authorisations per geography:

  • 27% for the operation in more than one EU member state
  • 19% for the operation in a single EU member state

ERA has been providing EU Member States and the European Commission with technical assistance in developing and implementing the Single European Railway Area. Since mid-June 2019, ERA has been mandated to issue single safety certificates and vehicle-type authorisations valid in multiple European countries and to ensure an interoperable European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
