Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) has secured a contract from Morocco’s national railway operator, ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer), for the supply of 30 intercity trains. The agreement includes an option for ONCF to procure an additional 10 units and access technical assistance and spare parts supply services. The contract is valued at nearly €600 million, with financing provided through Spain’s FIEM (Business Internationalisation Fund) program.
The trains will be designed for intercity operations, capable of reaching speeds of 200 km/h. Each unit will have a seating capacity exceeding 500 passengers and include provisions for individuals with reduced mobility. ONCF intends to deploy these trains on the Fez-Marrakech and Kenitra-Fez routes, aiming to support passenger services across the country’s main urban centres.
Morocco is carrying out a long-term rail infrastructure program, which includes network expansion and rolling stock renewal. The procurement of these new trains aligns with preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco is co-hosting with Spain and Portugal. As part of its broader objectives, ONCF plans to increase national rail coverage to 87% of the population by 2040, compared to the current 51%, and expand rail access to more cities across the country.
