It will probably take several days to restore the railway line between Hajdúhadház and Újfehértó after the derailment of the freight train, said the head of the Debrecen Regional Railway Directorate of MÁV Zrt.

According to the official, nine of the five-car freight trains travelling from Záhony via Hegyeshalm to Austria derailed and the two-track electrified line was completely blocked.

Both tracks were rendered impassable and the catenary system was badly damaged, with the damage potentially running into hundreds of millions of forints. No one was injured in the accident and passengers are being transported by replacement buses between Hajdúhadház and Újfehértó. Significant delays are expected on the railway line. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the police and the Railway Safety Department of MÁV Zrt.

The wagons lined up in the middle and at the end of the freight train skidded out, some of the wagons connected after the two locomotives remained on the tracks and stopped a few hundred metres away. Some of the wagons marked Rail Cargo Austria overturned, spilling the iron ore pellets they were carrying. Several wagons were crushed, piled on top of each other, fell off the tracks and came to rest with the rails completely crumpled. The pylons supporting the catenary and the reinforced concrete cross-ties were broken, and one of the derailed wagons, lying crosswise, completely blocked both tracks.
