Czech national carrier České dráhy (ČD) is seeking suppliers for new mobile train driver simulators as part of a wider effort to expand training capacity and modernise driver education.

České dráhy (ČD) is preparing to expand its training infrastructure with two new mobile simulators for locomotive drivers, complementing the fixed cab simulators it has operated since 2019 in Prague and Česká Třebová.

The operator has launched a public tender for the five-year lease of two portable simulators, including servicing and technical support, with an option for three additional units. The total contract value could reach CZK 47 million (€1.9 million), of which CZK 19 million (€0.8 million) covers the core order and CZK 28 million (€1.1 million) relates to optional extensions.

According to ČD, the mobile format will provide greater flexibility in organising training and allow simulators to be deployed in different locations as needed. Jiří Ješeta, Deputy CEO for Passenger Transport, said the leasing model would also make it easier to respond to technological developments in signalling systems and railway technology so that training remains aligned with current standards.

More than 200 new candidates for train driver positions pass through preparatory courses each year, and all of them use simulators as part of their training. Existing drivers also complete simulator sessions at least once a year. The devices are used daily and often at weekends, reflecting the high demand for practical training.

The simulators are designed to reproduce the driver’s cab environment in detail, including controls and realistic visualisation of track layouts, stations, crossings, signals and surrounding infrastructure. In addition to routine operation, they can be used to practise unusual or emergency situations such as obstacles on the line, signalling failures, operation on occupied track or movement under special signalling instructions.

After each run, the system evaluates the driver’s performance and the instructor reviews the scenario in detail. For ČD, the expansion is intended not only to increase training capacity, but also to intensify preparation for operational disruptions and non-routine situations in everyday railway traffic.
