Siemens Mobility has inaugurated a new USD 220m (approximately EUR 203m) rail manufacturing and services facility in Lexington, North Carolina, with production of passenger coaches now underway.
Located on a 200-acre greenfield site in Davidson County, the facility comprises ten buildings and serves as Siemens Mobility’s primary East Coast hub for manufacturing and rail services. More than 375 employees have already been hired, with the first locally built Venture passenger coaches scheduled for delivery in summer 2026, including units for Amtrak’s Airo fleet.
The Lexington plant is the first facility in North America capable of performing both passenger coach and locomotive overhauls. It will also provide maintenance services for bogies and has the potential to support light rail vehicles. The site incorporates advanced manufacturing technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, real-time analytics and augmented reality to optimise production and maintenance processes.
A dedicated rail bridge connects the facility directly to the mainline network, enabling efficient shipment of completed rolling stock to customers across the East Coast and nationwide. The investment is projected to contribute approximately USD 1.6bn (EUR 1.48bn) to North Carolina’s economy over a 12-year period, supported in part by a state Job Development Investment Grant.
The Lexington facility expands Siemens Mobility’s manufacturing footprint in the United States, where the company employs around 45,000 people, works with 12,000 suppliers and operates 24 manufacturing sites. The plant will play a key role in supplying modern passenger rolling stock for intercity and regional services, including those operated by Amtrak on the Northeast Corridor.
