The test took place on the Ligang Railway in Dongying, Shandong Province, covering the 74-kilometre corridor between Dongying Port Station and Mingji Station.
The trial train operated with 38 STX-series piggyback wagons supplied by China Energy. Six highway fuel tankers and 64 ISO tank containers were carried during the run.
Piggyback transport enables road vehicles to be loaded directly onto rail wagons, allowing road-rail transfer without reloading the cargo itself (similar to European Helrom, yet, taking in the entire truck, not just the trailer). The approach is intended to cut handling times, reduce logistics costs and lower carbon emissions.
The operation was jointly organized by China Energy Railway Equipment, the Dongying Municipal Government and Ligang Railway. The STX wagons are part of China’s second batch of national multimodal transport demonstration projects.
The trial is designed to address drayage requirements at Dongying Port and is positioned as a new option for integrating port, rail and road freight.
