Tarmac has opened a new rail-served aggregates depot in Rugby, converting a previously inactive siding into an operational freight site.

The facility, leased from Network Rail, is now being used to bring construction materials into the town by rail for local distribution by road.

The site is intended to reduce the reliance on long-haul road transport by shifting more of the initial material movement to rail. From Rugby, aggregates will be distributed to nearby construction projects including residential, commercial, and infrastructure developments.

The new depot is part of Tarmac’s broader logistics strategy, which includes increasing its use of rail transport across the UK. The company aims to reduce emissions and improve supply chain efficiency by locating distribution points closer to areas of demand.

The Rugby site adds to the number of former freight locations being returned to use. Network Rail and Tarmac collaborated on the project as part of ongoing efforts to bring disused rail assets back into commercial operation.
