Since the Munich-Riem intermodal terminal reached its capacity and cannot be further expanded, DB Netze started building the second terminal in the Bavarian capital on the site of the existing marshalling yard.

After evaluating several options, DB Netze, along with DB Cargo AG and Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße mbH (DUSS), decided to build a new transloading facility for combined transport in the location of Munich Nord marshalling yard.

There will be two handling modules that will contain 8 handling tracks, with lengths already set for the 740 m long trains. Six gantry cranes (3 per module) will provide transloading capacity. Fifty new jobs will be created. After the transloading terminal launch, the overall transloading capacity at the Munich location will increase to 534,000 units per year.

The marshalling yard in Munich Nord was put into operation in 1991, making it one of the most modern in Germany. It is located in the districts of Moosach and Feldmoching-Hasenbergl.
