Czechia: two trains collide, dozens injured, five seriously

This morning, an express train and a regional passenger train collided in the south of the Czech Republic (in the South Bohemia region), near the city of České Budějovice, leaving around 40 people injured. Five people in a serious condition.

According to Czech News Agency, traffic on the track has been halted. Five seriously injured people were admitted to the hospital in České Budějovice after the collision. According to hospital spokeswoman Iva Nováková, this is the final number of people seriously injured in this accident.

České dráhy (the Czech national carrier) website states that traffic was halted at around 6:20 a.m., and the integrated rescue system is responding.

Seven rescue crews and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene of the accident.

The cause of the collision is not yet known. Passengers from the trains are being evacuated by the integrated rescue system. An express train travelling on the route between České Budějovice and Plzeň collided with a regional passenger train.
