The return forms part of the operator’s December 2025 timetable, which adds 10,000 services annually.

LNER has reintroduced a daily InterCity 225-operated service between London King’s Cross and Newcastle from 30 March 2026, ending a more than five-year absence of the trains in the North East.

On weekdays, an InterCity 225 set operates the 14:33 departure from London King’s Cross to Newcastle, returning at 18:27 to the capital. At weekends, a 225 operates the 12:33 from London King’s Cross to Newcastle and the 16:27 return.

The InterCity 225 fleet, introduced in the 1990s for East Coast Main Line services, last operated to Newcastle in September 2020. Since then, the trains have primarily been deployed on West Yorkshire routes following the rollout of LNER’s Azuma fleet.
