The vehicles, which will help improve the safety and reliability of rail freight in Spain, are fully electric and powered only by renewable energy.

Renfe Mercancías has developed 100% electric locomotives in collaboration with ArcelorMittal. The energy they consume comes entirely from renewable sources. Now the first of these "Zero CO2" locomotives have been put into service for commercial running. A train consisting of 20 wagons and a locomotive from the ArcelorMittal factory in Trasona (north Spain) made its first journey with a load of hot-rolled coils weighing a total of 1,440 tonnes.

The locomotives, which will be used by Renfe Mercanciás to provide transport services for the steel company ArcelorMittal, were manufactured by the Swiss company Stadler Rail. The investment in the new locomotives, which was announced in February 2022, amounts to 64.7 million euros.

Renfe Mercancías with ArcelorMittal is committed to offering its customers the best service at the best possible cost. This is also their response to today's freight transport challenges, where the reduction of CO2 emissions is a top priority. The 12 new powerful locomotives with higher traction, which will be delivered to Renfe in stages, are designed to increase safety and reliability, have low track aggressiveness, lower noise levels, and no vibrations. Vehicles will enable to transport of longer and heavier trains, leading to more cost-effective services.
