Vienna’s City Airport Train (CAT) will introduce new Stadler KISS double-deck trains from autumn 2027 on the route between Vienna Airport and the city centre. The operator has presented the exterior design of the new fleet ahead of its planned entry into service.

The City Airport Train (CAT) plans to deploy new five-car Stadler KISS double-deck electric multiple units on its airport express service between Vienna Airport and the city centre from autumn 2027. The operator has now unveiled the exterior design of the new fleet.

The trains will be based on Stadler’s KISS200 platform, designed for high passenger volumes and intensive stop-to-stop operation. CAT said the new rolling stock is intended to accommodate growing demand on the dedicated airport express corridor, which is among the busiest rail links in the Vienna region.

According to the operator, the KISS double-deck configuration will provide increased capacity compared with the current fleet, while maintaining fast boarding and alighting for airport passengers. The trains are expected to replace the existing rolling stock currently used on the non-stop service.

The exterior design follows CAT’s established green colour scheme, updated with additional tones and a revised layout. While primarily a branding update, the new design accompanies a broader fleet renewal aimed at long-term operation of the airport rail link.

Stadler is supplying the trains for the project, with the KISS platform already in service on numerous regional and intercity routes across Europe. For the Vienna airport application, the vehicles have been configured specifically for high passenger turnover and intensive daily utilisation.

The introduction of the new fleet is scheduled for November 2027. Until then, CAT will continue operating its existing services between Vienna Airport and Wien Mitte, with no changes to the timetable announced so far.
