Amtrak presented its first Siemens Mobility-made Airo trainset in Washington as part of a fleet renewal programme scheduled to begin entering service in 2026.
The first trainsets will operate on the Amtrak Cascades corridor linking Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, BC, and Eugene, Oregon. All eight Cascades-designated trainsets are due to complete manufacturing in 2026.
For the Northeast Regional, the first Airo trainsets will complete production in 2026 and enter testing ahead of planned revenue service in 2027. The fleet is intended to replace existing rolling stock and increase capacity on key state-supported and long-distance corridors.
The Airo introduction follows the entry into service of the NextGen Acela fleet on the Northeast Corridor in August 2025. According to Amtrak, the new Acela trainsets carried more than 60,000 passengers in their first month of operation.
The Airo fleet forms part of a broader renewal of Amtrak’s rolling stock portfolio, covering multiple service types across the national network. Deployment will take place progressively as manufacturing and testing milestones are completed.
