A new three-year contract with long-standing partner Tesco PLC has been announced by Maritime Transport.

Tesco appointed Maritime to manage, plan and execute all rail operations at Tesco's central distribution hubs at Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT). The new contract builds on Maritime's 13-year relationship with the UK's largest grocery and general merchandise retailer, providing road distribution services to Tesco sites nationwide.

Under the new contract, Maritime will oversee the scheduling of seven daily rail services linking DIRFT to terminals at Mossend, Tilbury, Wentloog, Teesport and Inverness, while completing the final mile road flows to distribution centres and Tesco stores in Yorkshire, Middlesbrough, the Midlands and London.

Nick Potter, Transport Director, Tesco PLC, explains: "We are delighted to be strengthening our relationship with Maritime, using their extensive terminal network and expertise to support our commitment to efficient, low carbon logistics. Rail freight is one of the many ways we're reducing our emissions and the network will play an important role in helping us to achieve net-zero operations by 2035".

"Winning this contract with Tesco is another step in our intermodal growth as we continue to reposition our business and focus on a greener, lower carbon economy," adds John Bailey, Managing Director - Intermodal, Maritime Transport.

Staff from Eddie Stobart Ltd, who were previously associated with Tesco's rail operations at DIRFT, have transferred to Maritime.
