The Ukrainian State Railways Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ) will receive 63 power generators from Deutsche Bahn. The devices were loaded in Hannover last week and shipped by rail to Kyiv.
A further 325 smaller emergency power generators will be delivered to Ukraine in January. These devices be used to supply power to passengers and the workplaces of Ukrainian railway workers. “Despite the most adverse conditions, the incredibly courageous railway workers keep the railway operations in Ukraine running as much as possible. As DB, we stand firmly by the people in Ukraine. We support where help is urgently needed and provide heat in the stations, which is an important contact point for tens of thousands of people. We also provide heat to the maintenance workshops where the trains are repaired,” said CEO of DB Richard Lutz.
In a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in September 2022, DB and UZ agreed to cooperate in rail freight transport and the expansion of freight corridors and terminal capacities. DB is also to provide post-war reconstruction assistance. DB experts will help with the development of new freight corridors and terminals for transshipment between wide and standard gauge or with the upgrading of existing ones.
The companies have also found new solutions for transporting grain, agricultural products and iron ore from Ukraine. Due to the blockade and the difficulty of passing through Ukrainian Black Sea ports, DB Cargo created a grain bridge across Europe.
