Operations began in March with high-volume rail transport of finished vehicles from the Hungarian plant.

The first finished-vehicle trainset has departed from BMW’s plant in Debrecen, with operations managed by PSP Rail, the rail logistics subsidiary of Waberer’s Group. Under a contract running until 2031 and valued at several tens of millions of euros, PSP Rail will provide regular rail services to European seaports for onward export to markets including the United States and China.

The project includes a phased ramp-up, with additional services and expanded route coverage to several European maritime terminals from 2027.

PSP Rail has introduced 110 newly built vehicle transport wagons for the contract. The wagons are equipped with securing systems designed for automotive traffic. Traction is provided by Railpool-leased Siemens Vectron electric locomotives operating across European corridors.

The shift from road to rail is intended to replace several thousand truck movements per year from the Debrecen facility. The use of predominantly electric traction forms part of the transport concept on European routes.

The contract was awarded in 2024 following an 18-month preparation period that included procurement and infrastructure development. The mandate required capacity expansion and organisational adjustments within Waberer’s rail logistics division.
