Rail traffic on the full Zaragoza–Huesca–Canfranc line resumed on 9 June 2025, following a track and infrastructure upgrade managed by Adif. The €180 million renovation project focused on the Ayerbe–Caldearenas and Jaca–Canfranc sections, extending the work already completed in 2022 between Plasencia del Monte and Ayerbe.
Journey time reduction and operational impact
As a result of the infrastructure works, Renfe has reorganized its schedules across the line. The travel time between Zaragoza and Canfranc has been reduced by up to 30 minutes. On the Huesca–Canfranc section, all services are running 22 to 30 minutes faster than before the upgrade.
To meet the operational requirements of the revised timetable, Renfe has trained 71 drivers from Zaragoza and Teruel. The training programme covers requalification for drivers who had not operated on the route in the past year, and preparation of new personnel.
Scope of infrastructure works
Track renewal included the installation of approximately 130,000 metres of new rail, 133,000 multipurpose sleepers, and over 210,200 cubic metres of ballast. Fourteen turnouts were replaced across the affected segments.
Station accessibility was improved through platform widening at Riglos-Concilio, Santa María–La Peña (where the siding was extended to 750 metres), Castiello-Pueblo, Villanúa-Letranz, and Jaca.
Traffic management systems are also being upgraded along the Ayerbe–Canfranc section.
The infrastructure renewal programme is co-financed through the European Union’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by NextGenerationEU.
