While the renovation of one section of the narrow-gauge railway line from the Kenyan border to the capital of Uganda draws to an end, another new section of railway rehabilitation was awarded to the Chinese contractor.

Along with building a standard gauge railway line from Kenyan Mombasa via Malaba to Kampala, Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) keeps on renovating its meter gauge railway lines network, starting with a line that will be parallel to the standard gauge line. The company has announced that it is working on the last 27 km section connecting the capital, Kampala, with Mukono. From here, a renovated meter gauge railway line is already connected to Tororo on the eastern border with Kenya. The main aim is to enable bulk goods transportation to avoid road traffic congestion and associated costs.

URC has also launched a new railway line revitalisation from the town of Tororo. It has awarded China Road and Bridge Corporation (CBRC) to renovate the 382 km railway line from Tororo northbound via Mbale, Kumi, Soroti and Lira to end in Gulu Logistics Hub. The project, fully funded by the Government of Uganda, is scheduled for a two-year duration with costs of around EUR 50 million.
