Organized by a group specializing in horror events, the haunted bullet train ride transported around 40 passengers from Tokyo to Osaka amidst a staged zombie outbreak.

In a unique Halloween event, Japan's famous Shinkansen bullet train was transformed into a zombie apocalypse scene on Saturday, October 19. Billed by organizers as "the world's first haunted house experience on a running Shinkansen", the event attracted around 40 thrill-seekers for the eerie journey from Tokyo to Osaka.

The event immersed passengers in a simulated zombie attack, inspired by the South Korean action-horror film Train to Busan. Shortly after the train's peaceful departure, actors strategically placed in seats by the organizers, Kowagarasetai (meaning 'scare squad'), began their terrifying transformation, complete with bloody make-up and props. The organizers aimed to create a striking contrast between the bullet train's typically safe, quiet environment and the chaos of a zombie outbreak.

The themed ride also featured performances by 'zombie cheerleaders', magicians, and comedians. These helped to keep the atmosphere lively. Humour was added to the experience with light-hearted touches such as a choreographed dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller. The Central Japan Railway Company has hosted special events on the Shinkansen before. These have included a sushi restaurant, a bar, and even a wrestling match. This zombie-themed event has a ticket price of up to 50,000 yen ($335).
