The Ontario government has revealed the exterior design of the new trainsets that will operate the Northlander service between Timmins and Toronto.

The trains, developed by Siemens Mobility, consist of EPA Tier 4 Charger locomotives and three Venture passenger coaches, including one driving trailer. The configuration is designed to meet current accessibility and environmental standards while providing options for business and economy class travel.

Each trainset will include two economy coaches and one business class coach, reflecting efforts to address diverse passenger needs. Accessibility features include built-in wheelchair lifts, mobility aid storage spaces, and fully accessible washrooms. Passengers will also have access to galley-style food services and onboard Wi-Fi.

The Charger locomotives comply with the latest emission regulations, offering reduced environmental impact while maintaining the performance required for the corridor. The new trains are part of the province’s plan to reinstate passenger rail service in northeastern Ontario, a route that has been dormant since 2012. Service will include up to 16 stops, with schedules varying between four and seven days per week based on seasonal travel patterns.

The unveiling of the train designs aligns with infrastructure work underway along the corridor. Construction contracts have been awarded for platform reconstruction and the installation of pre-manufactured shelters at several stops north of North Bay. Additional efforts will include upgrades to lighting, signage, and accessibility features at these locations.

The Northlander’s return is part of Ontario’s broader transportation planning efforts, which aim to improve connectivity for communities in northern and southern regions of the province. The new trainsets are expected to complement these plans, providing a modernized rail experience for passengers traveling between Toronto and northern Ontario communities.
