The refreshed look, featuring a more prominent use of the company’s green colour and a dynamic visual style, aims to strengthen brand identity and attract more passengers.

VR has introduced a new exterior design for its trains, aligning with the company’s updated brand image. The design process was shaped by input from both passengers and VR staff, focusing on creating a look that is both recognizable and user-friendly. VR collaborated with Pentagon Design to ensure the new appearance is cohesive across various viewing distances—whether the train is seen from afar or close up on the platform.

The design incorporates linear elements that work with the different shapes of the train models, using variations in stripe width to convey a sense of movement. Accessibility needs were also considered to ensure the exterior is both functional and consistent with the brand’s visual identity.

This new design concept emerged from an idea competition held in the fall of 2023, organized with the design organization Ornamo. The winning design, tested earlier this year on two InterCity cars, served as a foundation for the final appearance now being implemented.

VR plans to gradually introduce the new design across its fleet, starting with newly acquired long-distance trains in Sweden later this year. The rollout will continue over the coming years, alongside interior updates, with the intention of minimizing disruption to train operations during the transition.

The current train design, in use since 2010, will be replaced step by step as VR works to ensure the new look will serve the company well into the future.
