Progress Rail has signed a contract with Canadian Pacific Kansas City to supply 65 EMD SD70ACe-T4 Tier 4 freight locomotives.
The SD70ACe-T4 locomotives comply with US EPA Tier 4 emissions requirements without exhaust after-treatment. Progress Rail reports a 5–7% improvement in fuel consumption compared with its first-generation Tier 4 platform. Each locomotive is rated at 4,500 hp and up to 200,000 lb of starting tractive effort.
The locomotives will be equipped with Progress Rail’s Talos energy management system, which the company says is certified by the EPA and optimises in-train forces through automated control. CPKC has tested the system in revenue service prior to placing the order.
The Progress Rail contract forms part of CPKC’s multi-year locomotive renewal programme, which the railway values at approximately EUR 735m (US$800m). The programme covers purchases from both Progress Rail and Wabtec, with manufacturing located in the United States.
CPKC confirmed that 30 of the 65 SD70ACe-T4 locomotives from Progress Rail are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2026. The remaining locomotives will follow as part of the same order. In parallel, CPKC is taking delivery of Wabtec Evolution Series ET44AC Tier 4 locomotives built in Texas, including 70 units expected during 2026.
