The company will provide advanced signalling, electrification, telecommunications, and high-voltage power supply systems.

Siemens Mobility has been awarded four contracts by HS2 Ltd. The contracts are worth a total of €670 million and are due to start in 2025. They cover signalling, electrification, telecommunications, and a joint venture to provide a high-voltage power supply along the HS2 route.

The key upgrade is the implementation of Automatic Train Operation (ATO) via European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, marking the first use of semi-automated operation (GoA2) on a UK high speed rail network. The upgrade aims to improve capacity, punctuality and energy efficiency. Siemens Mobility will also provide an Engineering Management System to enable real-time control and monitoring of the railway equipment to improve operational reliability.

Working with Costain Ltd, Siemens Mobility will develop high-voltage power systems, including substations to distribute power from the National Grid to the HS2 line. The company will also implement an operational telecommunications and safety system. This will include GSM-R technology and provisions for future upgrades to the FRMCS.

“HS2 is set to transform rail travel by offering faster and more reliable passenger journeys and freeing up freight paths in the UK. We are very proud to provide our wayside ATO over ETCS solution, enabling semi-automated train operations for improved capacity, punctuality, and energy efficiency on high-speed travel for the first time. Furthermore, we will deliver cutting-edge electrification technology and maintenance support for this groundbreaking project," said Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility.
