During the first half of the year, APM Terminals in Gothenburg added a total of four new destinations to its network, namely Oslo, Umeå, Saunaträsk and Haparanda.
"We have never seen such interest in our combined terminal, and volumes are now approaching the level of the record year 2022. Confidence in the rail network has never been higher and we expect at least five new shuttle lines after the summer. I can confidently say that we're heading for another record year," says Svante Altås, sales and rail expert at APM Terminals Gothenburg.
Over the past few years, there have been several major rail works as a result of deteriorating infrastructure, delayed responses and political decisions that have affected rail traffic. Despite this, most of the problems have been solved.
"Rail transport has not worked as well as it should have over the past year, but the opposite is true of the creativity and problem-solving ability of train operators. I'm very impressed by the strong motivation to continue developing solutions despite the challenges," says Svante Altås.
Other figures also testify to growth in the container market. In the first quarter of 2024, the total Swedish container market grew by 8%, making it the strongest growth quarter ever. At the same time, demand for Swedish forest products continues to grow, resulting in the highest containerised export volumes in the country's history.
