Network Rail and ProRail have sealed a partnership focused on innovation and technological enhancement. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed on August 18 in The Hague, marks a significant step forward in their collaborative efforts to transform rail operations.
This alliance follows years of close cooperation and technological advancements, including the development of the cab signalling system ERTMS Level 3 and the cutting-edge Fibre Optic Acoustic Sensing (FOAS) technology. Building upon a prior MOU signed five years ago, this new agreement demonstrates the commitment of both organizations to enhancing rail transport for passengers and freight customers alike.
“Network Rail and ProRail are both dedicated to running more reliable railways for passengers and freight customers, and we share many of the same challenges and opportunities. As well as new tech, we already share information on trespassing, managing our assets and even the impact of how Artificial Intelligence can help improve the way we work,” said Robert Ampomah, Network Rail’s chief rail technology officer.
Karel van Gils, ProRail Director of Innovation and Technical Renewal, emphasized the alignment in modernization efforts: “Both Network Rail and ProRail are committed to digitizing the railway systems as it will be key for a future proof, interoperable and reliable, high-capacity railway.”
