Drax, the leading UK renewable electricity generator, has completed its investment in 30 new rail wagons, with the delivery of the final wagon to its North Yorkshire power station.

These rail wagons, manufactured by the British firm WH Davis, are a significant upgrade to Drax's current fleet. The advanced design of these wagons allows for a 30% increase in biomass transport capacity per wagon, carrying up to 71.6 tonnes each. This innovation reduces the total number of rail journeys needed, consequently decreasing supply chain emissions.

Drax's initiative is part of the transformation into Europe's largest decarbonisation project and the UK's foremost single-site renewable power generator. The company has shifted from coal to sustainable biomass, using its fleet of 225 rail wagons, the first of its kind globally. These wagons were collaboratively developed by Lloyd’s Register Rail (now Ricardo Rail) and WH Davis.

The introduction of these new wagons cut carbon emissions on the Tyne to Drax rail route by over 25%. The company's biomass trains, crucial in transporting up to 30,000 tonnes of biomass daily, power millions of UK homes and businesses.
