The improvements include station renovations, track upgrades, and the installation of advanced railway technology to improve comfort, reliability, and connectivity.

The section between Feldkirch in Austria and Buchs in Switzerland is only about 18 kilometers long. However, it is particularly important for international rail traffic. International long-distance passenger services (Vienna or Graz - Zurich), local cross-border passenger services (Feldkirch - Buchs) and freight services use the single-track section from Austria via Liechtenstein to Switzerland.

This summer and in 2026, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG is carrying out extensive infrastructure measures to make the railway line fit for the future and increase comfort. At the same time, stations and stops are being renovated. In the case of the Feldkirch-Tosters stop, they are being completely rebuilt. The work will be carried out in two phases. This is due to the extent of the work in three federal provinces along the entire route. For passengers, this means two longer closures of the line, one in the summer of this year and one in 2026. This will allow the work to be bundled and completed within a tight timeframe, so that the line can be reopened in good condition.

"The planned cross-border construction work on the railway connection between Feldkirch and Buchs is an enormous challenge for ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. The aim is to connect Vorarlberg and thus Austria with Liechtenstein and Switzerland in a modern and reliable way. A modern railway infrastructure is the backbone of the dynamic economic region,“ said Judith Engel, Executive Director of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.

„We are talking about 18 kilometers that are not only important for international rail traffic but also for many people who commute to work here in the border triangle every day,“ commented Daniel Zadra, Climate Protection and Mobility Councillor, State of Vorarlberg.

Modernization will also be carried out at stations on the Liechtenstein side. Longer platforms will be built at Nendeln and Schaan-Vaduz. At Nendeln station, investments in track infrastructure and railway technology are also planned to ensure modern and safe train operations, including a new electronic interlocking that will control eight-level crossings.

Work will focus on the renewal and renovation of bridge structures, both in Liechtenstein and further afield in Switzerland. In addition, new tracks and switches, culvert renewal, and cable work are planned. In 2024 and 2026, a total of around €100 million will be invested in the extensive maintenance and modernization programme. Project partners are the State of Vorarlberg, Feldkirch Municipality, Liechtenstein and the municipalities of Eschen-Nendeln and Schaan.
