CSX has unveiled its first hydrogen-powered locomotive in partnership with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), demonstrating a shift to more sustainable freight transportation methods.

The new locomotive, which was converted from a diesel model at CSX's shop in Huntington, West Virginia, highlights the railroad's focus on more sustainable practices. Commenting on the launch, CSX President and CEO Joe Hinrichs said: "The successful debut of our first hydrogen-powered locomotive is a testament to the exceptional skill and dedication of our employees at the CSX Huntington Locomotive Shop."

The conversion process not only converted the locomotive to hydrogen power, but also extended the life of the existing unit by reusing components such as the frame, cab, traction motors and trucks.

Hydrogen power, known for its efficiency and zero emissions - only water vapour is emitted - is seen as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. This move by CSX and CPKC not only contributes to cleaner air, but also demonstrates the potential for significant environmental benefits in the rail industry.

CSX plans to conduct field tests with the new locomotive to further evaluate its performance and operational feasibility, continuing its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the rail industry.
