Hitachi and Toshiba won a contract to build 12 high-speed trains, comprising a total of 144 cars, to the Taiwan High-Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC).

The consortium, comprised of Hitachi, Toshiba Corporation, and Toshiba Infrastructure Systems & Solutions Corporation, will undertake this project valued at approximately 831 million EUR. The trains, which are scheduled for delivery starting in 2026, will be based on the highly advanced N700S train of Central Japan Railway Company.

The upcoming trains will be 300 meters long and operate at a maximum 300 km/h speed. They will offer improved aerodynamic performance and reduced weight compared to the existing 700T trains. Incorporating a compact traction system featuring a silicon carbide (SiC) device with a blower-less cooling system will ensure exceptional energy efficiency. Moreover, the trains will be equipped with lithium-ion batteries (SCiBTM) to provide power during low-speed operations during a power outage.

THSRC has been operating high-speed trains between Taipei and 350 km distant Kaohsiung since 2007, introducing the renowned Japanese Shinkansen system to Taiwan. Currently, the service is covered by 34 700T trainsets. They were supplied by a consortium led by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, with the last trainset delivered in 2015. These trains are based on Series 700 Shinkansen trains, used in Japan by JR West and JR Central.
