The La Boella Intermodal Terminal, located in the Port of Tarragona, has recorded a movement of more than 800 TEUs in a single week, underscoring its capability to manage high volumes of traffic efficiently.
The terminal processed a variety of container types, including 20- and 45-foot dry cargo containers and isotanks, demonstrating its flexibility in handling different kinds of freight. These operations are supported by rail connections to key regions across Spain, including the Basque Country, Castile and León, and Andalusia, enhancing Tarragona’s role as a crucial hub for intermodal transport.
With an annual capacity to manage up to 50,000 TEUs, the terminal operates primarily using reach stackers but is equipped to employ gantry cranes, which could further boost its throughput. The current operations have proven the terminal's readiness to handle significant traffic without disruptions, even during busy periods.
The successful handling of this volume is the result of coordinated efforts between several key players. WEC Lines, Synergy (part of the Hutchison Group), and Euroports have joined forces with Multirail, an existing operator at the port, to manage the increased flow of containers. Rail traction is provided by Captrain and Continental Rail, companies with extensive experience in the sector.
Transpaís has taken charge of on-site operations, including loading, unloading, and terminal management, ensuring a seamless process from rail to road. This collaboration has demonstrated the terminal's capability to meet the needs of its clients efficiently and reliably.
The La Boella terminal is well-equipped with eight electrified tracks, accommodating a mix of track gauges, and a length of 750 meters, allowing it to handle a wide variety of trains and cargo types. This infrastructure positions La Boella as a versatile and essential component of Spain's intermodal transport network, particularly during periods of rerouted traffic and increased demand.
