The service is aimed at time-sensitive freight traditionally moved by road.

A new intermodal service branded as Quantum de México has been introduced by J.B. Hunt, BNSF Railway, and GMXT, targeting cross-border traffic between the United States and Mexico. The product is based on the Quantum service model launched by J.B. Hunt and BNSF in the US in late 2023, now extended to Mexico in partnership with GMXT.

It includes features such as priority drayage, dedicated support teams, and tracking systems with real-time shipment visibility. Key connections include Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, and both US coasts on the northern side, with Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara on the southern side.

The launch was announced during the Congreso Intermodal de la Asociación Mexicana del Transporte Intermodal (AMTI) in Puerto Vallarta. J.B. Hunt has also opened a new office in Querétaro as part of its cross-border expansion plans.

This cooperation builds on the existing rail infrastructure, including the Eagle Pass Gateway, which the three companies began using for intermodal services in 2024. The shift seeks to divert part of the approximately 70% of freight that currently moves over the US–Mexico border by truck to rail-based intermodal alternatives.

Mexico is among the top 10 global exporters, with over two-thirds of its exports going to the US. Sectors relevant to the new service include automotive, electronics, agriculture, and other industries with demand for service-sensitive transport.

The service is promoted as an option for improving efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint of cross-border logistics. Rail intermodal reportedly generates an average of 65% lower CO₂ emissions compared to over-the-road transport.

J.B. Hunt operates the largest intermodal fleet in North America, while BNSF manages the continent’s most extensive intermodal rail network. GMXT covers nearly 90% of Mexico’s GDP areas and connects to six interchange points along the US border.
