The Hauts-de-France Region and SNCF Réseau have launched the modernisation of the Calais main line, a 4.4-kilometre stretch of track between Calais-Ville station and the port of Calais. The project aims to improve intermodality between the port and the rail network, ultimately increasing rail freight capacity. Major improvements, including the installation of noise barriers and a new railway bridge, are expected to be completed by mid-2025.
The modernization of the Calais main line is an important step in the development of rail freight capacity in the Port of Calais. By improving intermodality and increasing capacity, the project will enhance the efficiency and sustainability of rail freight, benefiting the local economy and communities. The works are expected to bring long-term benefits to the region's transport infrastructure.
The project will be delivered in two phases. The first, due to start this summer, will involve upgrading the existing tracks between Calais-Ville station and the Quai de la Loire. The second phase will focus on studying alternative routes between the Quai de la Loire and the Port of Calais, in particular the Dunes line, to further improve rail services in the area.
From July 2023, SNCF Réseau will replace the railway bridge over the Calais Canal. Once the bridge is in place, work will be carried out on the track, finishing work, and lighting. As part of the modernization of the Calais main line, priority is being given to effectively integrating the railway into its environment and protecting residents from noise pollution.
