BNSF Railway has introduced a new intermodal service linking Los Angeles and Houston with third-day delivery capability.

The route connects BNSF’s Hobart terminal in Los Angeles to the Pearland terminal near Houston, targeting time-sensitive freight movements between two of the country’s largest metropolitan regions.

Intermodal alternative to over-the-road freight

The service is positioned as an alternative to traditional long-haul trucking, offering faster transit and extended capacity on a direct rail corridor. It also aims to serve shippers currently relying on drayage from Dallas-Fort Worth to Houston by providing a through rail connection that bypasses the need for secondary road transport within Texas.

The route utilizes BNSF’s Southern Transcon corridor, one of the railroad’s core east-west lines for intermodal traffic. The company states that the offering is suited to freight requiring faster and more predictable handling than typical rail options, while retaining the cost advantages of intermodal transport.

Terminal-to-terminal configuration

The expedited service will move containers from Hobart Yard in Los Angeles—BNSF’s largest intermodal hub on the West Coast—to Pearland, a growing intermodal facility serving the southeastern Texas market. BNSF has framed the offering around reliability and competitive delivery times to support supply chain planning for both westbound and eastbound freight flows.

This expansion follows continued demand for more efficient rail services out of Southern California, particularly for cargo routed to the Gulf Coast region. The company is positioning the new schedule to support customers seeking to realign logistics networks with rail-based options, particularly in corridors experiencing congestion or cost increases in long-distance trucking.
