European transport company Samskip has successfully completed the first trials of its new intermodal rail service from Kaunas in Lithuania. The rail service will operate four times a week between the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal in Lithuania and Samskip's rail terminal in Duisburg, Germany, in partnership with LTG Cargo.

The rail service will be integrated into Samskip's Baltic Sea trade services with a focus on the UK, Ireland, Norway, the German Ruhr area and the Benelux countries. The new capacity allows Samskip to offer competitive connections to and from Kaunas, the industrial hub of the region, and Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.

The Duisburg terminal connects directly to Samskip's Pan-European network, offering a market-competitive door-to-door transit time of 9-10 days from Lithuania to the UK, with a four-day improvement compared to the previous service from Lithuania.

The new rail service is an example of the company's efforts to offer its customers the opportunity to connect Lithuania with core markets in Europe while reducing their carbon emissions. "At Samskip, Pioneering, Sustainability and Customer-Centricity are at the very core of our DNA. We are happy to combine these core values in the new intermodal service from Kaunas,” said Johan van der Pijl, Samskip Regional Director for the Baltic Sea.
